This term refers to the method of compensation for the financial planner. “Fee-Only” planners are compensated solely by fees paid by their clients and do not accept commissions or compensation from any other source. “Fee-Only” planners believe there is a significant” conflict of interest” if an advisor stands to gain financially from the purchase of any product he or she recommends to the client.
For all our services we charge a fee directly to our client. We do not sell products or receive any commissions. Our only compensation comes directly from our clients. That way you know what you are paying for our services, and know that we are only working for you.
Some planners are compensated entirely by commissions from the providers of products recommended and sold. Others, referred to as “Fee-based” or “Fee-offset,” charge both a fee and receive commissions from selling products.
They are most often used by representatives of insurance companies and major investment advisors. They receive a commission when they sell you a product (e.g. an annuity), or when they have you purchase a “loaded” mutual fund. The “load” represents their commission. Usually any fund with “A”, “B”, or “C” shares has some type of commission associated with it. No-load mutual funds only have one type of share.
